While the majority of our adult programming is designed for ages 16+, some of our programs are designed for families & people of (almost) all ages and have been included below!
Drawing & Painting
Exploring Realism with Charcoal with Brandon Liesen Ages 16+ Mondays July 8 - August 19 (5 weeks) | 6 - 9 pm *no class July 22 & August 5 Learn to create realistic drawings with clarity and expressiveness with Teaching Artist Brandon Liesen. Students will use photographs and from-life references to explore the principles and techniques of how to render light and form to produce believable drawings in charcoal. Subjects will include portraits, still life, landscapes, animals, etc. This course focuses on using charcoal as a medium and is not a technical drawing course. Geared towards beginners but open to all. This class has drop-in options available, & pro-rated options after the 1st class. |
Realism in Oil: A Beginner's Class
with Brandon Liesen Ages 16+ Wednesdays July 3 - August 21 (7 weeks)| 6 - 9 pm *no class July 24 Geared toward beginners with little to no experience in oil painting, the objective of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of how to construct a realistic oil painting with Teaching Artist Brandon Liesen! Using a limited palette of colours, minimal solvents, and with special emphasis on composition, value, and colour, this course will provide straightforward instruction of how to work in layers to paint a realistic image using oils. Intermediate painters are welcome as well! Registrants are required to bring their own materials. For the first class please be prepared to bring 1 HB and 1 2B pencil, and a 9x12" pad of paper. Brandon will go over any questions about the materials needed for the rest of the class! This class has drop-in options available, & pro-rated options after the 1st class. |
Shading 101
with Floriana Ehninger-Cuervo Ages 16+ Saturdays July 6 - 27| 10 am - 12 pm So you managed a good drawing, but now how do you shade the thing?! During this four-week mini-course, we will go over techniques (and drills to improve your techniques), materials, and theory. The aim is to demystify shading and set you up for success to keep practicing at home! Ideal for students that have previously taken a drawing course, or have some drawing experience. We will start with simple objects, but move quickly towards shading the human form. This is a brand-new course taught by Teaching Artist Floriana Ehninger-Cuervo! |
Photography
Foundations of Darkroom Photography (Beginners)
with Liliana Del Vedova Ages 16+ Fridays August 2 - 23 (4 weeks)| 6 - 9 pm Join Teaching Artist Liliana Del Vedova and her traveling darkroom in this NEW photography course! This course is designed to introduce the fundamental principles of darkroom photography. Through a blend of demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on sessions, students will explore black-and-white photography. Key topics will include camera functionality, darkroom techniques, refining exposure mastery, crafting compositions, and capturing captivating portraits. Materials will be provided, however, students who have a 35mm SLR or medium format camera are encouraged to bring them. This class has drop-in options available, & pro-rated options after the 1st class. |
Printmaking
Intermediate Print Space
with Michaela Zinsmeister Ages 16+ Tuesdays July 9 - August 27| 6 - 9 pm Are you a printmaker who needs to place to create? Looking to socialise with other printmakers in an inclusive environment? Then join us in this Summer Edition of Open Print Studio for printmakers who've previously taken Intro to Print, or are experienced in printmaking! Intermediate Print Space is perfect for students to work independently while being supervised and have access to our knowledgeable print instructor, Michaela Zinsmeister! Due to the open studio nature, students are expected to bring their own projects and printing blocks and plates (ie. lino & wood blocks, intaglio plates, etc.), and paper for printing on to use and are encouraged to bring their own inks. Participants will have access to the studio printing presses, and general printing equipment (lino cutters, dry point needles, rollers, & more!), alongside guidance and minor instruction from Teaching Artist Michaela Zinsmeister. This class has drop-in options available, & pro-rated options after the 1st class. |
Course Refund Policy
- Full refunds are available if the school cancels the course.
- Cancellations by the student made at least a week before the class starts will be given a 100% refund, minus a $20 admin fee.
- Cancellations made between 3 and 7 days before the class starts will be given an 80% refund minus the $20 admin fee.
- Cancellations made after the first class but before the second class will be given a 70% refund minus the $20 admin fee. We are not able to issue refunds for cancellations made after the second class. A credit to the registrant's account may be offered, or, if space is available, the option to switch to another class.
